Fridge, oven and dishwasher cavity sizes in Australia

The holes your cabinets leave for the oven, dishwasher and fridge, from Australian installation guides, in millimetres, with sources.

The numbers that matter.

Size the cavity from the installation guide, not the product. For one range of 60cm built-in ovens the product is 596mm wide but the cut-out is 600 × 600mm. One built-under dishwasher needs an opening 600mm wide and 820mm high. NSW social housing leaves a fridge space at least 800mm wide in a studio or one-bedroom home and 900mm with two bedrooms or more.[1][2][5]

These are common sizes and published guidance, not rules. Every cabinet can be sized to the room and the people using it. Confirm appliance and fixture sizes against the exact model you buy.

Check a fridge space.

Simple arithmetic on the figures above. Swap in your own measurements.

  1. Width: the WHE6060SB is 896mm wide, so a 900mm space leaves 4mm in total. Its maker says it is designed for a 90cm cavity; check its own manual for side gaps, because another model's manual asks for 5mm a side with a 50mm rear gap.
  2. Depth: its total depth is 781mm, 181mm more than a 600mm bench, so it will stand forward of the benchtop unless the cavity is recessed.
  3. Height: 1725mm + 30mm air space = 1755mm clear under any cupboard above it.

Limits of this guide.

  • Every appliance figure is for the model named. Other brands and models differ, so always use the installation guide for the model you buy.
  • The NSW social housing fridge and dishwasher spaces are that agency's requirements for its own homes, not a rule for private homes.
  • We did not verify integrated (panel-ready) fridge or dishwasher cavities, oven towers with a microwave, or 90cm freestanding cookers.
  • Plumbing, power and gas positions come from each installation guide and your trades; they are not covered here.

Common questions.

What size cavity does a 60cm built-in oven need?
For one Westinghouse range of 60cm ovens the flush-mount cut-out is 600mm wide, 600mm high and 581mm deep, with a full-width ventilation gap 20mm deep at the bottom rear of the cabinet. Other models differ.
How big is the opening for an under-bench dishwasher?
One 60cm Westinghouse built-under dishwasher needs a cut-out 600mm wide, 820mm high and 580mm deep. Common dishwasher widths are 600mm, or 450mm for small kitchens.
How wide should a fridge space be?
NSW social housing requires a fridge space at least 800mm wide in a studio or one-bedroom home and 900mm with two bedrooms or more. Large French door fridges are made for a 900mm space; one 565L model is 896mm wide.
How much gap does a fridge need around it?
It depends on the model. One Westinghouse fridge manual says a 5mm side gap needs a 50mm rear gap, and at least 300mm beside the fridge in a corner lets the doors open far enough to remove the bins.
