Kitchen island sizes and clearances in Australia

How much room an island needs around it, how deep and long it should be for stools, and how big a single stone slab is, in millimetres, with sources.

The numbers that matter.

Leave about 1200mm between the kitchen run and the island, and about 1000mm of walkway on its other sides. An island with stools is commonly 900mm deep: a 600mm cabinet plus a 300mm overhang for legroom. Four seats take about 2500–2600mm of length. For a join-free stone top, a Caesarstone mineral slab is about 3270 × 1640mm.[1][2][5]

These are common sizes and published guidance, not rules. Every cabinet can be sized to the room and the people using it. Confirm appliance and fixture sizes against the exact model you buy.

Clearances around the island

Australian design guidance plus a voluntary accessibility guideline. We found no Australian Standard that sets island clearances for ordinary homes.

Size an island for four stools.

Simple arithmetic on the figures above. Swap in your own measurements.

  1. Length: four seats need about 2500–2600mm of island, well inside a 3270mm slab.
  2. Depth: 600mm cabinet + 300mm overhang = 900mm. A 300mm overhang sits at the start of the 300–500mm band where the stone manual above calls for brackets, so ask your stonemason.
  3. Room width across the island: 600mm back bench + 1200mm + 900mm island + 1000mm walkway behind the stools = 3700mm.

Limits of this guide.

  • We found no Australian Standard that sets island clearances or seat widths for ordinary homes. The 1200mm and 1550mm figures come from a voluntary accessibility guideline (Livable Housing Australia, Gold and Platinum levels); the rest is designer guidance.
  • Designers differ: one source gives 1000mm walkways around an island, another a minimum of 1100mm. We show both rather than pick one.
  • Overhang limits depend on the stone, its thickness and the brackets. The figures above are one maker's rule of thumb for its own product.
  • Slab sizes differ between stone brands and ranges, and a stonemason may need an allowance for cutting. Confirm with your supplier.

Common questions.

How much space do you need around a kitchen island?
Australian design guidance suggests about 1200mm between the kitchen run and the island and about 1000mm of walkway on its other sides. One kitchen designer sets a minimum of 1100mm and prefers 1200mm or more for every walkway.
How deep should an island bench with seating be?
A common depth is 900mm: a 600mm deep cabinet plus a 300mm benchtop overhang, which gives about 300mm of legroom.
How long does an island need to be for four stools?
One Australian kitchen designer allows 2500mm to 2600mm of island length for four seats.
How big can a kitchen island be without a join?
It depends on the slab. A Caesarstone mineral slab is about 3270mm by 1640mm and a Caesarstone porcelain slab has a workable area of about 3160mm by 1560mm, so a longer top needs a join.
How far can a stone benchtop overhang without support?
One engineered stone maker's manual says a 20mm top can overhang less than 300mm without extra support, needs brackets at 600mm centres or a steel bar from 300mm to 500mm, and needs posts or panels beyond 500mm.
