Standard cabinet dimensions in Australia

Standard Australian cabinet sizes in millimetres, for kitchens, wardrobes, vanities and laundries.

The headline numbers.

Standard Australian cabinets follow a consistent set of sizes in millimetres. A kitchen benchtop sits about 900mm high, on a 720mm base cabinet body over a 100–150mm kickboard. Base cabinets are 560–600mm deep; overhead cabinets are 720–905mm tall at 300–350mm deep. A wardrobe door zone is about 1850mm. These are standard, typical sizes — always adjustable to suit the job.

Every figure on this page is a standard or typical size used across Australian joinery. They are a starting point, not a rule — any cabinet can be sized up or down to suit the room, the ceiling height and the people using it.

Common size questions.

What is the standard kitchen benchtop height?
A standard Australian kitchen benchtop finishes about 900mm above the floor. That is a 735mm base cabinet body sitting on a 125–145mm kickboard, with a 20mm benchtop on top. It is a typical size and can be adjusted to suit the people using the kitchen.
How deep is a base cabinet?
A standard kitchen base cabinet is 560–600mm deep. Overhead (wall) cabinets are shallower at 300–350mm deep so they sit clear of your head over the benchtop.
What height are overhead cabinets mounted at?
The bottom of an overhead cabinet usually sits about 1485mm from the floor, which leaves a 565–585mm gap above the benchtop. A standard overhead cabinet is 905mm tall, with a 260–320mm bulkhead above it up to the ceiling.
What is the standard wardrobe hanging rail height?
A single long-hang rail sits about 1700–1850mm high, which suits full-length garments. For double hanging, the two rails sit at roughly 1000mm and 1900mm so you can stack shirts and jackets.
When do you need two doors instead of one?
The standard rule is that any opening wider than 600mm gets two doors, and an opening of 600mm or narrower gets a single door. This keeps each door a sensible width so it does not sag or foul nearby walls.
What is the minimum walk-in wardrobe size?
A walk-in wardrobe needs about 1.5m by 1.5m of usable space to work — roughly 600mm of cabinet depth plus a 700–900mm walkway. Around 2m or wider is comfortable if you want cabinetry on more than one wall.
