The numbers that matter.

Common Australian vanity widths are 600, 750, 900, 1200, 1500 and 1800mm, with depths around 450–550mm. A floor-standing vanity usually finishes 850–900mm high; a wall-hung one is often set 800–900mm high. Where AS 1428.1 applies, the accessible basin rim sits 800–830mm above the floor.[1][2][3]

These are common sizes and published guidance, not rules. Every cabinet can be sized to the room and the people using it. Confirm appliance and fixture sizes against the exact model you buy.

Widths and depths

The nominal width is a label; the actual cabinet can be a few millimetres off it.

Set a wall-hung vanity height.

Simple arithmetic on the figures above. Swap in your own measurements.

  1. Pick the finished height you want at the top of the bench or basin rim, for example 850mm.
  2. Subtract the benchtop and cabinet body. With a 20mm top on a 550mm body (use your product's own figure), the underside of the cabinet sits at 850 − 20 − 550 = 280mm off the floor.
  3. An above-counter basin adds its own height on top of the bench. Use your basin's spec sheet, then lower the cabinet to suit.

Limits of this guide.

  • AS 1428.1 is a paid standard. We cite the 800–830mm rim height through the published summaries linked below, not the standard's own text.
  • AS 1428.1 generally applies to accessible facilities covered by the building code, not to every private bathroom. Check with your certifier if you are unsure.
  • Above-counter basin heights vary too much to give one figure.

Common questions.

Common widths are 600, 750, 900, 1200, 1500 and 1800mm, with compact 400–500mm options. The label is nominal: one range sold as 900mm measures 904mm, so check the actual width.

Around 450–550mm is typical, and slimline vanities under 460mm deep suit powder rooms.
What height is an accessible basin under AS 1428.1?
Where AS 1428.1 applies, the washbasin rim is installed 800–830mm above the finished floor, with knee clearance underneath.
