Starting a design

Get the room right first — walls, openings and heights — and the cabinets follow.

Start a new job#

On Your jobs press New job. Start a new room offers two ways in:

  • Start from a layout — pick the room, pick a layout, give the main wall length, and your design is built, saved and shown in 3D.
  • Or start a blank room — pick a room tile and press Start configuring.

Starter layouts#

There are 26 ready-made layouts: four each for kitchens and wardrobes, three each for laundry, vanity, TV unit, pantry, study and mudroom. Kitchens, for example, offer Galley kitchen, L kitchen, Compact kitchen and Family kitchen. After you pick one, type the main wall length (for example 3600, or tap 2.4 m … 4.2 m) and press Create my design. The cabinets are resized to fit; every size can change later.

Inside a job with an empty wall, Start this wall offers Use a starter. Applying a starter replaces the cabinets on the plan (you are asked first) — Undo brings the old layout back.

The eight room types#

Room tileWhat it is for
WardrobeBedroom robes, walk-ins, hinged or sliding fronts
KitchenBase and wall cabinets, benchtops, appliances, corners
LaundryTubs, washer/dryer spaces, base and wall storage
TV UnitMedia wall, floating cabinets, open display
Bathroom VanitySingle or double basin, drawers, benchtop with cut-outs
PantryFloor-to-ceiling storage, pull-outs, shelving
StudyDesk-height base, benchtop, optional overhead shelves
MudroomLockers, bench seat, shoe drawers, overhead cupboards

Each room type sets its own default heights, depths and construction rules. On the Free plan (after the trial) only Wardrobe can be started; the other tiles open the upgrade screen.

Wall sizes#

Open Room in the top bar (or press R). Under Walls & cabinets each wall card (Wall A, Wall B …) has:

  • Length, Height and Depth in mm. The card shows how much of the wall is used (for example Σ cabinets+fill 3600 / 3600 mm).
  • Wall paint — a Dulux or Taubmans colour for the 3D wall.
  • Raked ceiling — low height (0 = flat) for a sloping ceiling.
  • Fillers & end panels — left/right filler, left/right end panel and filler depth for the whole wall.
  • Openings (windows / doors / niches) — add a Window, Door or Niche with its position, width and heights.

If the cabinets leave a gap of 20 mm or more, a bar offers to close it with fillers. In the simple view, Fill this wall with cabinets lays out a sensible run for you (it asks before replacing one).

Measuring tip

Measure each wall at three heights and use the smallest. Our how to measure a room guide walks through it.

Room shape and layout#

At the top of the Room panel, pick the shape. Wardrobes offer Room shape (Linear, L-shape, U-shape, Walk-in, G / 4 walls). Kitchens offer Kitchen layout: Single run, Galley, L-shape, U-shape and G-shape. The other rooms have their own layout pickers. Changing the shape redraws the walls and corners.

Coming soon

The kitchen Island, Peninsula and Butler pantry layout tiles are marked Not yet. You can still drag any cabinet off the wall onto the floor to make a free-standing island.

Job details and room defaults#

Also in the Room panel:

  • Job details (simple view: Project details) — client, job name and handle type (these appear on your drawings).
  • Job info & appliances (title block) — spec notes, appliance models and site details printed on the plan set.
  • Doors & colour (job default) — the door style, colour, material and finish every new cabinet starts from. See Colours & materials.
  • Room defaults — floor finish and pattern, the default door colour for new cabinets, one door style for the whole room, and (trade view) the room's carcass material.
  • Placed fixtures — non-cabinet items you added (furniture, appliances, trims).

Heights: kick, bulkhead and ceiling#

In the trade view the Height stack card sets the room-wide ceiling height, depth, bulkhead, top cupboard and kickbase heights, with a No bulkhead tick. Heights for one cabinet live in the Inspector — see Top cupboards and bulkheads.

Draw the walls yourself#

For a room that is not a simple straight, L or U shape, use the Draw walls tool (the pen icon in the top bar, or the Draw menu on smaller screens). Switch to Plan, click to place the first corner, then click each next corner. Use Add window and Add doorway and click a wall to place openings; edit their sizes in the Room panel.

Trace a floor plan from an image or PDF#

If you have a builder's plan, a real-estate floor plan or a photo of a sketch, you can put it under the drawing and trace over it.

  1. Press Trace a floor plan: it is on the empty plan, in the Room panel, and in the command palette (⌘K). It opens the Draw walls tool in Plan (where the button also sits, top-left) and asks for the file.
  2. Press it and pick a PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC or PDF. For a PDF with several pages, the app asks Which page is the floor plan?
  3. The Floor plan panel opens reading Not to scale yet — set the scale.

Set the scale#

  1. Press Set scale, then tap the two ends of a wall whose length you know (a dimension printed on the plan is ideal).
  2. Type the Real length — 3600 or 3.6m — and press Set (or Redo to pick again). The panel now shows Scale set.
  3. Use Move to drag the plan into place, and the Rotate and Opacity sliders to line it up.
  4. Tick Snap to plan lines and the wall tool snaps to the lines found in your plan.
  5. Draw the walls over it.

Other controls: Show floor plan (hide it without deleting), Include in plan-set PDF, Replace and Delete. The traced image stays on your device and in your job — it is never shared on a client link.

Corners#

L, U and G shapes have corners. The Corners list in the Room panel sets each corner's treatment and sizes (blind, magic corner, lazy susan, tower, diagonal or open). To place a corner cabinet by hand, use the Corners group in the Library — those tiles say Drag onto a wall corner to place. Blind-corner hardware is on the cabinet's Build tab.
